Jacqueline Bell Johnson

Artist Jacqueline Bell Johnson has been involved with LGT! since the beginning (she is a founder).  Her latest project will occur at Human Resources gallery in Chinatown (Los Angeles) mid March.  She is creating an installation that fills the whole gallery and it will house musician Dorian Wood and his orchestra during five nights of performances.

She has launched a hatchfund campaign to help fundraise.  We hope that you consider contributing and spreading the word about this project.

Julie Orr

Julie Orr is an artist whose focus is on the attraction and repulsion of consuming.  Often using trash (like plastic bottles) and photographs (which she models for) and cosmetics to create colorful paintings, sculptures, and installations.  Julie’s work has also addressed the translation of consuming to the digital age, where we can gorge ourselves on information, or author it.  Her piece “Public Profile” was included in LGT!’s Plastic Sunshine.

Christine Salama

Christine Salama was one of our artists from our first show Plastic Sunshine.  Her work reflects the ideas of history as created by a society and personal history.  She uses encaustic to create her work which is a direct reference to her heritage.

Dominique Ovalle

Dominique Ovalle has participated in several shows with LGT!  She hosted Parallel a group show on contemporary landscape, which also included a piece by her.  The works shown here were from Just Ignore Me.  Her work is interested in exploring the purity and serene beauty of water through a spiritual lens.  She is an outdoors woman and traveler,  and many of her paintings are inspired by directly observing and experiencing the global landscape.

Strange Comfort

Officially announcing Strange Comfort, an LGT! exhibit happening in January 2014 at the Da Center for the Arts in Pomona, CA.  The show is being curated by Conchi Sanford, and will include her work along with Jacqueline Bell Johnson, Chuck Feesago, Ivan Farmer, Betsy Lohrer Hall, and possibly more artists.  The show will include Painting, Drawing, Installation, and Monumental Sculpture.  Here is a preview of the show graphic:

Takeshi Kanemura

Takeshi Kanemura was an artist in our show Plastic Sunshine at Groundspace Project, and also performed collaboratively during the event Including You.  He just returned from a trip to his birthplace in Okinawa prefecture, Japan.   (He performed there as well, and when I get pictures I will happily share them.)  These performances are important to him, because while at times the performances are duplicated, the nature of a western audience versus an eastern audience is what comes into play.  That being said, Takeshi considers all of his performances as collaborative, at least between him and the audience.  He also likes to consider his influences: growing up in Okinawa, which has a US Military base, has given him a unique perspective of both what is Japanese, and what is American.  He seeks to demonstrate this combination of cultures in the making of his identity through his work.  Typically exhibited are the “artifacts” of his performances.  Sometimes the leftover materials used, sometimes more formal paintings on canvas.  These are a record of the body in motion and a reminder of the fleetingness of the moment which makes performance as a medium so intimate.

In The Works, Strange Comfort

Conchi Sanford will be curating Strange Comfort on behalf of LGT! at the DA Center for the Arts in Pomona.  The show will open January 11th 2014.  Conchi will have a sculpture or two in the show, and installations by Jacqueline Bell Johnson, Betsy Lohrer Hall, and Chuck Feesago, possibly with a few other artists as well.  (In fact, I think most definately more artists.)

As LGT! starts to put together the show, we went over to the DA on a good ol’ fashioned field trip.  We got lots of pictures for reference in the studio for the participating artists, and bonus: sneak preview of the new show going up for the month of December.  The show is GUIDES, a group show featuring current work from Mt. SAC art faculty.  (Mount San Antonio College for those of you long distance readers.)

The Claremont Graduate University Art Department is pleased to host the 2013 ReMODEL 2 Sculpture symposium as part of its Bradshaw Conference Series on Saturday, October 19th from 9:30am-4pm at the Garrison Theatre. This event is free and open to the public. Over twenty internationally recognized artists from across California Universities and Colleges will present papers and dialog on the current state of sculpture pedagogy.
ReMODEL 2 looks to explore the responsibility within sculpture for handling critical theory and maintaining an ongoing and inclusively expansive dialog. As sculpture has experienced an incredible trans-disciplinary revolution over the past 50 years ReMODEL 2 explores the intersection of art and disciplines as varied as digital, video, time-based, performance, sound, light, installation, public practice, engineering, computer science, cultural studies, identity politics, literary theory, cultural hegemony and historiography.

Concurrent with the symposium will be an exhibition of the artists at the CGU Art Department Galleries, who are presenting including faculty from: Claremont Graduate University, Scripps, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Stanford, CCA, OTIS, Cal Arts, Art Center, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, Cal State Long Beach, San Francisco Art Institute, and Hunter College.
